Trailblazer Award

Each year, the Psychosis and schizophrenia spectrum SIG presents an award to a mental health scientist practitioner who has made a pioneering impact on the knowledge and treatment of serious mental illness. This trailblazer presents their work at the SIG meeting during the ABCT Annual Convention and is presented with an award acknowledging their achievements.

2022 PASS-SIG Trailblazer Award

Patrick Corrigan, Psy.D., was awarded the 2022 PASS-SIG Trailblazer Award during our annual PASS-SIG meeting in celebration of his achievements in research, clinical work, and his evaluation of psychiatric rehabilitation, and how stigma and discrimination negatively affect this process.

Patrick Corrigan is Distinguished Professor and Associate Dean for Research at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Dr. Corrigan has worked most of his 20 year career to provide and evaluate services for people with psychiatric disabilities and their families. His work has been supported by NIMH for more than ten years to, among other things, develop and lead, the Chicago Consortium for Stigma Research (CCSR); he is its principal investigator. Recently, the Chicago Consortium evolved into a national collection of researchers with support from an NIMH developing center grant. The National Consortium includes colleagues from Yale, UPenn, and Rutgers. Corrigan has authored more than 250 journal articles and 10 books. He is also editor- in-chief of the American Journal of Psychiatric Rehabilitation.

Amy Weisman de Mamani, Ph.D.

Amy Weisman de Mamani, Ph.D., was awarded the Trailblazer Award in celebration of her achievements in research, clinical work, and the development of evidence-based treatments for people with serious mental illness and their families.

Amy is a Professor and Associate Director of the Adult Clinical Psychology Program at the University of Miami. Her research has addressed the cultural, familial, and religious factors that influence the course of serious mental illness and the mental health of supportive family members. Her work with fully bilingual Hispanic/Latinx individuals has also furthered our understanding of how language and cognitive factors may impact psychotic symptoms. Dr. Weisman de Mamani has recently published a manual on her seminal work, Culturally Informed Therapy for Schizophrenia (CIT-S), an evidence-based 15-week family therapy that draws upon members’ cultural beliefs, practices, and traditions to help them conceptualize and manage mental illness.

Gary Bond, Ph.D.

Gary Bond, Ph.D., a Westat senior research associate, is the recipient of the 2020 PASS-SIG Trailblazer Award, in celebration of his achievements in research and dissemination and implementation of evidence-based services for people with psychosis and the schizophrenia spectrum.  Spanning four decades, his work includes early replications of the assertive community treatment model and the first studies of supported employment.  Bond and colleagues pioneered the development and validation of fidelity scales measuring quality of implementation of evidence-based practices.  Fidelity scales that he helped develop are now used in hundreds of programs worldwide, promoting delivery of effective services.  As co-investigator on the National Implementing Evidence-Based Practices Project, he helped create five standardized fidelity scales.  His recent work has focused on the evaluation, dissemination, implementation, and sustainment of Individual Placement and Support supported employment.  Bond delivered a presentation on his work, entitled “Measuring Fidelity to Evidence-Based Practices,” at our SIG’s annual meeting at the ABCT virtual convention.

David Penn, Ph.D.

David Penn, Ph.D., is the recipient of the 2019 PASS-SIG Trailblazer award, in celebration of his achievements in research, clinical work, and dissemination and implementation of evidence-based services for people with psychosis and the schizophrenia spectrum. This work has included better understanding social cognition across the development of schizophrenia and its relationship to treatment outcomes, the development and implementation of Social Cognition and Interaction Training (SCIT) program, Individual Resiliency Training (IRT), and early intervention for first episode psychosis. Dr. David Penn was one of the founders of the Outreach and Support Intervention Services (OASIS), one of the earliest first episode psychosis comprehensive specialty care programs in the US. He was also a key investigator in a NIMH-funded RAISE study which examined the effectiveness of coordinated care treatments like OASIS. Dr. Penn delivered a presentation on his work, entitled “Mentors and Mentees,” at our SIG’s annual meeting at the ABCT convention in Atlanta, Georgia.

Shirley M. Glynn, Ph.D.

Shirley M. Glynn, Ph.D., is the recipient of the 2018 PASS-SIG Trailblazer award, in celebration of her achievements in research, clinical work, and dissemination and implementation of evidence-based services for people with Psychosis and schizophrenia spectrum.  This work has encompassed supported employment, social skills training, and family therapy to promote recovery from schizophrenia and psychosis.  Her work highlighting the critical importance of the family environment and family interventions has been particularly groundbreaking.  She’s been a principal or co-principal investigator on NIMH and VA funded studies examining the benefits of behavioral family therapy in schizophrenia, combat-related PTSD, and co-occurring substance use disorders, as well as testing innovative strategies to involve families in the care of their loved ones with serious mental illnesses.  Dr. Glynn is one of the original members of the PASS-SIG.  She is a Clinical Research Psychologist at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System at West Los Angeles and a Research Psychologist at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA).
